What to look for when buying your first laptop?

Hey! So, I’m looking for purchasing my very first laptop. The world of laptops is quite confusing and I’d like some help. I’ve looked through Consumer Reports and searched on the internet. My purposes for the laptop would be for high school/college work… normal things I guess.
What else should I look for when buying a laptop?
What’s your favorite laptop?
What’s the best brand to buy?
Ahhh, it’s mind-boggling. Thanks so much for answering and helping me out! (: P.S.- My parents are allowing me to split the price half and half with them so that’s a bonus! I’d love to get a MacBook (cause I’d pay about $ 500 of it) but my good friend has one and I don’t want her to think I’m copying her. :(

Dependability. Check out Consumer Reports. As for a MAC vs. a Windows based PC it all depends on what you want to do. If you choose a Mac make sure you check to see if it has the software you use/want.

Avoid HP, too many outstanding class action lawsuits on their laptops. This includes Compaq who HP bought

Before buying you have to chack processor, ram, hard disk

and toshiba tablet release date

toshiba tablet laptop get I am getting a new computer and it is a laptop. i looked in consumer reports and found one i liked but it had only 2gb of RAM. it didnt seem like much and i think that that is the speed but im not sure. i saw that most computers in the chart had the same RAM and only a few desktops had 3. I asked my brother and he said xp couldnt take more than 2gb of RAM and Vista 8. i wanted to confirm this so i asked a friend at school. He said that my brother was wrong, xp can take 7 gb and vista 15. i got 2 very different answers and i need help…

What Does RAM mean?
What Does RAM do?
What is the effect?
How much can Windows XP handle?
What is the difference between 2,3,4… GB of RAM?
How would more help me?
How much is worth getting for what it does?

RAM is how much memory your computer has to run applications (more RAM will mean a faster computer).

Windows XP 32 Bit can handle 3 GB 64 Bit can handle 7 GB

With Windows XP, you wouldn’t really need more than 2 or 3 GB of RAM anyway. I wouldn’t be too concerned over getting more.

ok ram is random access memory, essentially this controlls how many programs and commands ur computer can hold or run simultaneously. depending on ur processor and OS xp can handle no more then roughly 3gb for 32bit and above 4gb for 64bit. the more ram the better.

If you are worried about memory issues get x64 platform

Ram: Random Access Memory
Makes your computer run faster.
XP: 7GB
The more you have the faster your computer runs when you’re multitasking.
Gamers: 4+ GB Anything else 2-4GB will work

Ram – random access memory

it does: its a spot to store data for fast access… if there wasnt ram, your processor would have to search your hard drive, which is much slower…….. Ram is used just temporarily by what every programs you have running…. its the equivelant of having a beer fridge next to the lounge

the effect: the more the better (to a ceiling) although you can never have too much…. if you have too little it slows down the machine

winxp can handle as much ram as you can buy, its limited by your motherboard

difference between 2,3,4… get 4 with vista, 2 is enough for winxp

more would help you by enabling your processor to run at its maximum efficiency…. it lets you open videos, programs etc without the computer struggling and slowing the video etc

its cheap, although 2gb is plenty for winxp…

RAM = Random Access Memory

Acts like short term memory. stores information in a random order and can be accessed really fast and in any order. All of this information is lost when the computer is restarted. This is what is used before the data is stored on the HD.

It’s not how much Win XP can handle, but how much your mother board will support. Windows may only “recognize” so much RAM but that doesn’t mean it won’t use it.

2 Gig = 2048 Mega bytes
3 Gig = 3072 Mega bytes
4 Gig = 4096 mb….the more the better

Allows you to store more temporary information. Which means that it will access information faster.

Get as much as you can for the price. If it’s going to cost $ 400 for 4gb and $ 300 for 2gb then get 4. If that makes any sence. 2 GB would probably be fine for now, but as technology goes forward it won’t be enough. Basic rule of thumb is to buy the best now, then in 12 months it will be average instead of being outdated.

RAM is Random Access Memory. The more your computer has, the better it is able to accomplish many different processes over several different applications. Your processor speed is how fast this is accomplished, and it is this to which you should spend more attention, especially given that you found a laptop you liked with 2GB of RAM. This is quite adequate for all the operating systems you mention. While it is true that OS are becoming more and more “RAM hogs” (requiring more RAM) you should be able to get started with this minimum just fine. Down the line, you may find you want or need more RAM, but 2GB is a totally appropriate place from which to start, especially if you are using a basic Microsoft Office package (including IE). You may want to go to the DELL website and check out some of their laptops – you can “build” your own specs and see what the corresponding costs will be. I suspect you will find better deals there, than going to a consumer-oriented electronics store. Good luck~
