Q&A: What are some good scholarships for high school seniors entering their first year in college? in Massachusetts?

I will be in college in the fall of 2011…i am ranked 11th out 336 students, i play 2 sports (volleyball/tennis), captain of the math team, i am also in the mock trial team, Asian American club, i have volunteered at a hospital since my freshman year, i am interested in medicine (i have shadowed a doctor), i have been a class officer, Latin Club. and my parents are from India.

1. No doubt you have already spoken with a financial aid counselor at the college/univ. you will be attending in the Fall. If not, do that 1st and find out if there are scholarship funds that the college/univ. has available for just its students for which you may be eligible. Telephone or talk with a financial aid counselor in person.

2. I assume you have already completed and submitted the FAFSA (Free Application for Financial Student Aid), so the college/univ. you will be attending can consider you for a financial aid package. If not, this is the link to that U.S. Dept. of Education web site:

http://www.fafsa.ed.gov

3. Through the FAFSA home page there is also a link to Student Aid on the Web (a tab near the top of the page.) Click on that tab and select and look at the info on all of the links there, and then follow the on-screen instructions. You may be able to find scholarships for which you are eligible and for which you can apply.

4. For an electronic tool to find scholarships and grants for which you can consider applying, the very best/most reliable is through the College Board (they publish the College Blue Book & administer the SAT.) They do not sell your email address to other sites which will send you a lot of spam.
Go to: http://www.collegeboard.org
Click on the For Students link
On the next page, click on the Pay for College link (green tab)
On the Pay for College page are links to a number of useful electronic tools:
Financial aid planning; Scholarship Search
You will need to register for free for the best results.

5. Like my local public library, your local public library may subscribe to an electronic database which can be useful for locating specialized scholarship funds. If you are not familiar with the electronic databases available through your public library, then either go in-person to the library or telephone and talk with a reference librarian. The database available through my public library is called GrantSelect. It is accessible from my home computer/internet with my valid library card.

6. When you do find scholarships/grants for which you may be eligible, be sure to follow the application rules to the letter.

Keep in mind that many, many other college students are looking for and applying for scholarship funds. Those organizations offering scholarships only have a certain amount of $ $ $ available to grant. Plus, many organizations only grant a few scholarships each year.

If you have not already considered this . . .
Another possible source of funds while you are attending classes/enrolled in a college/univ.– a part-time job. Sometimes an on-campus job is easier to juggle with class/studying needs. Usually a college/univ. financial aid office oversees postings for on-campus jobs. One will probably be limited in the number of hours one can work on-campus. Hint: The campus library and the campus food service usually need the most number of reliable student workers + they both are open a lot of hours during the week. Off-campus jobs are a possibility too. Usually restaurants and bars near campus need workers on a regular basis – the work may not be “glamorous” and may start with just busing tables. Extra income IS extra income. :-)

Best wishes

My daughter will be a high school senior this year. I’m really confused about the scholarship and financial aid process. The FAFSA must be completed before anything else can be done? Everything online that I’ve found for FAFSA still shows the 2010-2011 school year. I’m about to pull my hair out!!

Haha, you sound like my mom.. I will also be a senior in high school this fall. I just talked to my high school counselor about this: Relax..FAFSA stuff needs to be done January of senior year, so you don’t need to worry about that just yet. I encourage you and your daughter to go talk to her counselor to make sure you know all of the details. Scholarships, your daughter can start looking at NOW. ( I have already applied to like 8 or so this summer so far). There are some good scholarships that have deadlines this summer or early fall, but more will be available later. Has she been on www.fastweb.com? It matches her to scholarships that she may qualify for. Does your daughter know where she is applying? Most colleges start taking applications for Fall 2011 semester around the middle of September. It is important to apply early, because some colleges have their big scholarships that are due in October, and you have to be admitted already to apply (aka people who applied early, in Sept) So, sometimes if you apply right away, there are more scholarship opportunities available. You should probably talk to her counselor though, he/she could give you more detailed info on FAFSA, local scholarships, etc.. :)

January 1 2011

but she need to know six schools that she might go to

she will need to know her school code to THE school she is going to completed the FAFSA

and you will have to get that from the school
