help with scholarships, grants...anything!!?

I am currently being forced to take a year off from school because of financial difficulties. My mother is still trying to pay off my tuition for the Spring 2011 semester and I cannot go back to school until that is paid off. That isn’t expected to be paid off until the middle of the Spring 2012 semester. I have been looking for jobs to try to help her out and to try to save for when I do go back to school, but nobody seems to want to hire me. I am a sophomore at a Catholic college in PA and being a sophomore is making the scholarship search that much more difficult because most of the scholarships I’m finding are for seniors in high school going into their freshman year of college. I have applied for loans and have been denied every single time. My dad would be the perfect person to cosign for a loan but he refuses to do so. Everybody I’ve asked to cosign has tried but their credit scores were too low. Whenever I find a scholarship, I read through the qualifications and eligibility requirements (obviously) to make sure that I qualify. When it seems like I may qualify, I always read that I either have to be a part time or full time student to be eligible for the scholarship. Obviously, I am neither of those. I finished out my freshman year with a 3.3 GPA and I made the Dean’s list for the Spring 2011 semester with a 3.5 GPA, but none of that matters if I’m not a part time or full time student. I am an intelligent, 19 year old, African American, first generation, female college student trying to do something with my life and make something of myself. I have never experienced any feeling worse than wanting so badly to go to school and not being able to simply because I can’t afford it. I feel like I have tapped out all of my resources. If anybody can please point me in a direction where I could possibly get some help, I would appreciate you FOREVER.

This is a tough situation to be in. THe best suggestion I have is to sit down with your Financial Aid Advisor and see what type of help they can suggest, or maybe point you in the right direction with your student aid. Also, maybe you should contact a state organization to see about any type of State grants or maybe contact organizations that offer special scholarships or grants to student in your situation. Being an African-American female might offer some type of funding like that. I just am not sure where to point you.

There should absolutely be some kind of way to have your financial aid package re-evaluated. If nothing else, ask a counselor at school what are the steps for you to get emancipated, since your father is not willing to help you get a loan and your mother is having difficulty paying back her Parent Loan. In that case, you will get student loans which won’t be due back until after you graduate.

The purpose of financial aid is so that finances won’t be a barrier for you get a college education, and it sounds like your package is not fulfilling that duty.

If it comes to it, try also writing a letter to the president of your university or the dean who’s list you were on and explaining your situation to them. Sometimes you can get a favor just by asking and departments often have funds to help out high achieving students as well.

Step 1 should always be completing the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov
Step 2 is to contact your school’s Financial Aid office to see if you will qualify (3-5 days after FAFSA)
Step 3 is to see whether or not your Federal student loans and Pell grant will cover your tuition. If not, and your mother is unwilling to take on any additional debt, you might want to speak to the financial aid office about any scholarships they could recommend.

Also, when applying for the scholarships, if you had one, you would be a full or part time student ;)

I’m an incoming senior for the 2011-2012 school year at a normal high school, and just quite curious as to what my chances are of getting into UF.
I believe my unweighted GPA is a 3.8 or so, not quite sure what my weighted GPA is, never really checked. I got mediocre scores on my SAT and ACT (I took it for the first time with no preparation whatsoever.) and got a 1670 and a 23 respectively.
I have approximately 100 community service hours and will have more to come. (possibly double)
My strongest thing is that I am a dual enrollment student and will have my A.A. about a month before I graduate high school.
My major is in philosophy and/or ethics and I hope to achieve a doctorate degree in it in order to teach as a college professor. This is why the school I am looking towards is UF because it is the only school in Florida (where I live) that has degrees in philosophy all the way up to the doctorate level that I am willing to accept living in. The only drawback about living there I believe would be that it is party central, and I despise the whole crazy college wild parties and immaturity of it all.
I also believe I have a good chance of being in the top ten students at my school, I don’t want to seem cocky or overconfident, so I only say I have a chance.
The main question is what are my chances of getting into UF?
Are there any scholarships as well that may help me?
I can’t seem to find a scholarship for Asians. Are there any? (Vietnamese) (no family member has ever had college either)

u need to improve your scores. chances r good. so work on it. scholarship dont really specify color. apply UF and other foundations.
