How much help should i expect from FASFA?

I am a senior this year and i applied for FASFA and I wanted to know how much aid i would get. I really don’t have any Scholarships offers. My mom makes 27,000 and dad doesn’t contribute to the family. So pretty much he doesn’t live here. I also have a brother in High school that might be attending college in 2011. Is this gonna effect how much I get from FASFA?

The FAFSA is a great tool for colleges to figure out at a glance what your needs are. They will determine your “EFC” or Expected Family Contribution. That will be how much you and your family must contribute to your tuition through paying bills or getting private loans. The school will do its best to cover tuition costs through scholarship and federal loans for the rest of the cost.

If you feel the EFC is too much for your family to handle, talk to your financial aid officer at your college for more options.

Your younger brother will probably not have an effect on this FAFSA, but once he is in college it might have an effect. If I remember right, the FAFSA does look at how many family members are in college.

Hi!! I am a senior in high school who is currently residing in Jacksonville, FL ((Asian-American)).

These are the schools I got into ((No particular ranking)):

University of Miami ((With a $ 20,000 scholarship)),
UNF ((With a $ 10,000 scholarship and entry into the honors program)),
American University in Washington, D.C. ((For the Spring Term 2011 — no word on scholarships yet; But, I was accepted into the Washington Mentorship Program)), and
John Cabot University in Rome ((More details to come soon!)).

I am eligible to be a FAS scholar for bright futures. My Estimated ECF from FAFSA is 0 ((up to $ 5500? from Pell Grants)), but it’s not set in stone yet.

There are other universities I got into, but they weren’t in my top 4 ((I did not apply to UCF, FSU. or UF)).

Now my question is, which would be “best”/”more suitable”/”insert word here” for my interests?

Currently, I’m debating whether I should enter into Pharmacy ((Parents’ urging + general interest in science [particularly Chemistry] and math))

OR

Some form of international relations study((somewhat of an inborn desire/liking + I’ve always been interested in the Peace Corps/community service abroad/international travel)).

Tuition and fees are a considerable factor in my college decision, considering I’ve been attending a Catholic school all my life ((HEFTY SUM!)) and my parents deserve a break from working ((in mid-50s already)).

P.S., if it is not too much work, could you also suggest a job that might incorporate both worlds ((and provide a good pay as well))?

see http://www.BiznFin.com

well..im an asian from texas but im a senior too soo i know some stuff.
anways, stay in florida cuz its much cheaper AND you have scholarships.
doesnt miami have a pretty nice med program thats not too hard to get into?
if i were u id stick to that.
UNF is good too cuz its cheap.

idk, im one of those cheap asians who like to stay instate for the sake of saving money.
since thats wat u want, u should stay in flo.
but dont go to rome. its wayyy to expensive. and when u wanna come back to visit, its a freakin 20 hr plane ride or something.

sorry im not much help. i really dont know much about how florida is.

That’s great to have so many doors open.

Between now and the beginning of second year university, you will change your mind many times. Go with sciences and maths in order to keep your doors open.

Your parents know you better than anyone. Have faith in their judgement.

If it were me i would finish University, become a pharmacist and still have LOTS of years left to participate in a service position.

That’s what I did and I have no regrets.

Wow, you are a bright student! If you have the interest, and want to make big bucks, go for chemical engineering! I have a couple of friends who work for DuPont, make buckets of money, and love their job! They are married to each other, have four kids, and now that all the kids are back in school, the mom just returned to work there…but he made plenty to care for them while she stayed home for a few years.

There is an article on Yahoo today about the top salaries for the next few years.

Pharmacists, for the most part, burn out quickly, and though they have good pay, they are on a crappy time-schedule, often work holidays AND weekends, rarely get lunch-breaks, work 12-hours shifts, and just learn to hate the job rather quickly. The burn-out takes longer in a hospital or private setting, but in a drug-store chain, you will probably hate life pretty soon….I have friends who are PharmD’s in both settings and the one at the hospital is a lil happier than the retail pharmacist….but don’t let your parents decide your future job….

Good luck in whatever you do!

One consideration is that if you go UNF, you can continue staying at home instead of paying for housing – either that or go UM, since the additional scholarship would probably about make up the difference. (No sense in graduating with any higher debt load than you need to.) However, UNF might still have the edge…attending school under an honors program always looks impressive to potentiel employers.

The only thing I could think of that incorporated international relations and pharmocology might be a position at the CDC, which is tasked in part with international disease control.

I live in jax…do I know you?

You should NOT go into pharmacy cause I’m going into pharmacy and less competition is always better

If you want to go to Miami, you should also look into the Private School scholarships that the DOE of Florida offers

UM is the best option by a huge margin as far as academics are concerned. You get FRAG and Bright Futures, which, added to the Dickinson scholarship, will almost cover everything.

International relations and pharmacy/chemistry are two very interesting things to want to do together, but something with Doctors without Borders or an organization like Global Cures might be workable. These, obviously, don’t provide good pay though. Instead, working as a medical officer at some sort of Embassy, in the military, or a traveling doctor for the government might work better.

Does anyone know anything about the new consulate in el paso tx .immigration issues on i-130 interview( 2011)?

im a senior student and have an inmigration interview this year, the same year i apply for colleges, take tests, play soccer, aply for scholarships, and graduate from high school. does anyone know how long does it take if im elegible for a green card so i dont loose any school days?

there are no US consulates in the USA

Hi Luis, there is no “new consulate in El Paso” as far as I know. The U.S. consulate is over the border in Juarez. So assuming your are consular processing, you will need to exit the United States in order to attend your immigrant visa interview. This means that if you are not granted an immigrant visa for some reason, then you will likely not be able to (legally) return to the United States and will be stuck outside the country for some time (possibly a very long time, depending on why they might have denied your visa). I would check in with an immigration attorney to make sure that there will not be any problems with your visa application before leaving the country. For example, if you do not have lawful immigration status and stay in the United States more than 180 days past your eighteenth birthday, there will likely be problems with your visa application.

Once you do go, you will need to attend a medical appointment and one or more visa interviews. The very best case scenario is two or three days in Juarez I believe, and it could easily be quite a bit longer. You can read more about people’s experience with the process at http://www.smf.juarez-mexico.com/ . Scan the message boards for information about logistics such as where to stay in Juarez, how long lines will be, etc. But for the legal aspect of this, I would really consult an immigration attorney to make sure you are going to be eligible for a visa.

I am a New Zealand citizen, and i might be going to High School for Senior year, starting 2011. And i was wondering if it is at all possible to gain an academic college scholarship if i am not a resident/citizen? I’d be an exchange student, but i may want to go onto high education since here in New Zealand we go straight into jobs and careers after High School.
Will i have to be sponsored to go back the USA for college?
Is it even possible for me to obtain a full-paid scholarship?

It is not possible to get a FAFSA scholarship however, if you have fantastically outstanding academic credentials, you might get a scholarship from the college. Harvard will give a scholarship to anyone that they accept if there is an inability to pay. The problem is that it is almost impossible to get accepted at Harvard.

Post Secondary Help??? Should I do it?

~ I will have 21 credits for graduation by Feb 2010.
~ I have no Scholarships
~I took my first ACT score was 15. I need 27 to get into Ohio State University Application deadline is FEB 1, 2010.

~I already took my senior classes during my junior yr.

{Can it be possible if I have to stay 1 yr more at High School. My cousnloer will allow me to skip yr in college, go as a sophomore in 2011 fall. What classes will I be able to take next yr? Will I be able to skip a yr in college. If I am in High School as a senior 2011.} Please give me a good answer. I will be 19 next yr 2011. Omg what should I do? Who should I ask help from. Will next yr I will have harder classes college level classes AP kind. Because I took 1 AP Biology this yr. It’s easy I like it. Will It be those kind of classes in order for me to skip yr dual enrollment college. Should I do Post Secondary and earn college while in high school, or do dual enrollment, to skip a yr in college. I really want to skip a yr in college then I will be on my track. graduate from college in 2014 instead 2015. Will Post Secondary help me. If I take next yr my senior yr.

No, they will not let you stay in high school an extra year and have that count towards college, I think that is part of what you’re asking. Honestly its all so incoherent its hard to understand. You can’t skip a year in college, from the looks of your question you really need all the schooling you can get. As for your ACT score, try taking a prep class or something because a 15 isn’t going to get you in anywhere.

Whatever you do, don’t take AP English. By reading your question, I think it is quite possible you might fail that course.
Regardless, continue on taking AP courses.

Stay in School another year…. in Ohio you will be able to take some college course in your last two years… don’t know why you didn’t take any thing year…. I do mean actual college course from a community and those credits should transfer. That will make less course you need when you hit college….Study again for your act and hopefully you will score much higher next time around. IF you wait until September of 2011 to attend college…. you will already have college credits under your belt…. then maybe even a scholarship or two….. it could be will worth the wait… Plus you could even take college course in the summer of 2011… hopefully and on track to graduate in 3 years instead of 4.

help with scholarships, grants...anything!!?

I am currently being forced to take a year off from school because of financial difficulties. My mother is still trying to pay off my tuition for the Spring 2011 semester and I cannot go back to school until that is paid off. That isn’t expected to be paid off until the middle of the Spring 2012 semester. I have been looking for jobs to try to help her out and to try to save for when I do go back to school, but nobody seems to want to hire me. I am a sophomore at a Catholic college in PA and being a sophomore is making the scholarship search that much more difficult because most of the scholarships I’m finding are for seniors in high school going into their freshman year of college. I have applied for loans and have been denied every single time. My dad would be the perfect person to cosign for a loan but he refuses to do so. Everybody I’ve asked to cosign has tried but their credit scores were too low. Whenever I find a scholarship, I read through the qualifications and eligibility requirements (obviously) to make sure that I qualify. When it seems like I may qualify, I always read that I either have to be a part time or full time student to be eligible for the scholarship. Obviously, I am neither of those. I finished out my freshman year with a 3.3 GPA and I made the Dean’s list for the Spring 2011 semester with a 3.5 GPA, but none of that matters if I’m not a part time or full time student. I am an intelligent, 19 year old, African American, first generation, female college student trying to do something with my life and make something of myself. I have never experienced any feeling worse than wanting so badly to go to school and not being able to simply because I can’t afford it. I feel like I have tapped out all of my resources. If anybody can please point me in a direction where I could possibly get some help, I would appreciate you FOREVER.

This is a tough situation to be in. THe best suggestion I have is to sit down with your Financial Aid Advisor and see what type of help they can suggest, or maybe point you in the right direction with your student aid. Also, maybe you should contact a state organization to see about any type of State grants or maybe contact organizations that offer special scholarships or grants to student in your situation. Being an African-American female might offer some type of funding like that. I just am not sure where to point you.

There should absolutely be some kind of way to have your financial aid package re-evaluated. If nothing else, ask a counselor at school what are the steps for you to get emancipated, since your father is not willing to help you get a loan and your mother is having difficulty paying back her Parent Loan. In that case, you will get student loans which won’t be due back until after you graduate.

The purpose of financial aid is so that finances won’t be a barrier for you get a college education, and it sounds like your package is not fulfilling that duty.

If it comes to it, try also writing a letter to the president of your university or the dean who’s list you were on and explaining your situation to them. Sometimes you can get a favor just by asking and departments often have funds to help out high achieving students as well.

Step 1 should always be completing the FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov
Step 2 is to contact your school’s Financial Aid office to see if you will qualify (3-5 days after FAFSA)
Step 3 is to see whether or not your Federal student loans and Pell grant will cover your tuition. If not, and your mother is unwilling to take on any additional debt, you might want to speak to the financial aid office about any scholarships they could recommend.

Also, when applying for the scholarships, if you had one, you would be a full or part time student ;)

I’m an incoming senior for the 2011-2012 school year at a normal high school, and just quite curious as to what my chances are of getting into UF.
I believe my unweighted GPA is a 3.8 or so, not quite sure what my weighted GPA is, never really checked. I got mediocre scores on my SAT and ACT (I took it for the first time with no preparation whatsoever.) and got a 1670 and a 23 respectively.
I have approximately 100 community service hours and will have more to come. (possibly double)
My strongest thing is that I am a dual enrollment student and will have my A.A. about a month before I graduate high school.
My major is in philosophy and/or ethics and I hope to achieve a doctorate degree in it in order to teach as a college professor. This is why the school I am looking towards is UF because it is the only school in Florida (where I live) that has degrees in philosophy all the way up to the doctorate level that I am willing to accept living in. The only drawback about living there I believe would be that it is party central, and I despise the whole crazy college wild parties and immaturity of it all.
I also believe I have a good chance of being in the top ten students at my school, I don’t want to seem cocky or overconfident, so I only say I have a chance.
The main question is what are my chances of getting into UF?
Are there any scholarships as well that may help me?
I can’t seem to find a scholarship for Asians. Are there any? (Vietnamese) (no family member has ever had college either)

u need to improve your scores. chances r good. so work on it. scholarship dont really specify color. apply UF and other foundations.

~ I will have 21 credits for graduation by Feb 2010.
~ I have no Scholarships
~I took my first ACT score was 15. I need 27 to get into Ohio State University Application deadline is FEB 1, 2010.

~I already took my senior classes during my junior yr.

Can it be possible that I can graduate this yr I am a junior. But I have full credits for graduation. But not a good act score to get in to Ohio State University. My friend told me to go Columbus State and than transfer from there to Ohio State. You dont need to take the act to go columbus state. But when I transfer won’t I need to show act score when I get transfer to Ohio State after a yr or a quarter. After how long will i be able to transfer to Ohio State from there. Can that happen? Should I do that. Or work on my act score improve it and then go OSU next yr 2011 fall spend a yr in high school. I wont have any classes to take. Because I took my senior yr classes this yr. Or Should I do post secondary in high school, or dual enrollment. I don’t know what to do?? Plzzzz help:) i have no scholarship? My major will be Medical

Indians girls are smart good job!! punjabmiss lady but remember don’t look too much smart is always a good thing i suggest you to finish your year in a normal way with humility you will find a job
without having all that pressure from people that think you are some kind of genius who can not take a rest anyway good luck bye bye

There is no such major as “medical”, and pre-med is NOT a major. You need to know this.

I agree with the previous poster. Do some more research about your career.

That being said, graduate now, go to community college, then transfer to Ohio State. I don’t know Ohio State’s transfer policy, but they may ask for your ACT score so take it again.

I want to graduate from high school a yr early. I mean I am suppose to be a Senior instead junior. but because i had head surgery when i was in 3rd grade. they put me back a yr. Now I am earning high school on online taking online classes. Do you think that would work? Does attendence count toward early graduation. I think you need to have 97% percent attendence I did only 3 absents because i was sick. Does that counts!!. I took the ACT test and got 15 score on first time. You need 27 to get into Ohio State Univerisity. the scholarship deadline is dec 1 for ohio state university. i don’t think i will get the scholarship from college. Do you think I should apply for financial aid, because i don’t want to repay the loan. Please help find a solution to this problem. I want to graduate in 2010 instead of 2011. Tell me how can I get a scholarship from the college. How can I get admission into college. I’m going in circles earning my credits first. And can you get scholarship by searching on online. How much $ $ $ $ $ of scholarship do you think i need to go into Pre-Medicine. Becoming a Neurosurgeon. I want to get a headstart in college. What should to my counslour. I really nervous what if she says you cannot graduate. I’ll be sooooo sad:( Tell me how to in order start out. Right now I am earning credits on online I already earned 7 need only 1 more. from last yr I had 8. plus more 8 equals 16. and how in high school i am earning 6. you need 21 to graduate i’ll have 22. The next act is in dec 5 the college deadline is dec 1. I don’t think i will make it. can you tell me websites to earn good scholarships for going into medicine. if the college does not give scholarship to me. for going into medical. I will vote best answer to who helps me out with this problem. :)

I think you need to ask your guidance counselors these questions. You have so many and I’m afraid of telling you something that could be wrong:

I have heard of kids graduating early but all I’ve seen are Seniors that end up finishing school a semester ahead of their classmates. You’ll need to qualify, not only to graduate high school early but to also go to the college that you want to attend in the future and you might be better off taking that extra year to ensure your success.

You can file for financial aid but as a college student, there’s almost no way of avoiding student loans unless you qualify for a program/scholarship that will pay for your entire tuition and you’d still probably have to pay for books too.

As for your desire to be a neurosurgeon, you’d have to first go to college and take Liberal Studies, get a Bachelor’s and then go to Medical School. That’s more $ because you need a Master’s degree to be a doctor and you’d also have to a residency at a local hospital and pay to practice whatever type of medicine you want to practice. Ask a college counselor about those steps, especially about what to study for your BS/BA.

Go to your school’s Career Center and ask them about the different types of scholarships you qualify for. Ask your parents if they can get a scholarship for you through their line of work. If you have a job, ask your boss if there’s a scholarship that you can apply for. Don’t forget about doing your FASFA because that way you’ll qualify for federal and state grants. Grants don’t have to be paid back, I think.

Calm down a little! Running in circles will get you no where! :)

Many guidance counselors lie about things. My apologies to the guidance counselor above, who sounds like an honest fellow, but both my best friend and I were lied to about state requirements in junior high. He tried to force us into Home Ec, which was not a state requirement, but that counselor apparently really loved it.

They lied to my mother about other things as well, including the state’s laws about graduation requirements, academic standards, and schooling at home. Apparently they didn’t want her to school us at home, even though she could see that the public schools were boring us to tears, and that the seven hours a day we spent on campus was seven hours a day that we could have been actually learning instead of watching other kids learn what we had learnt three and five years ago..

Look, check on your state’s laws and see what they say about attending an online school. MOST states consider online schools to be real schools. They may have requirements about those schools, like accreditation, attendance, and record-keeping, but since an online school is no different from any other private school, there generally isn’t a whole lot they can say in opposition to them. But of course graduation is between you and the school.

Getting accepted into OSU is between you and OSU. You will almost certainly need to pull up your ACT score. I dunno how they balance the test score against your grades. When you send in your application tell them you’re testing on Dec. 5 and the ACT will send them your results. That’s the best you can do in that respect.

As for their accepting your progress with the online school as real progress, they’ll probably have the same attitude about it as the attitude they take about homeschooling, which is almost undoubtedly “that’s fine”. I’m also thinking that even if your high school blocks you from graduating for the credits you’ve earned online, your online school will certainly accept the credits you’ve earned in public school, and will surely give you a diploma if you’ve completed their requirements.

Get your scholarship application in before the deadline or else. Missing the deadline means no scholarship for the year, no matter how smoothly things go in every other respect. Get your other financial aid application in as well. It never hurts, while missing the deadline always does.

Please don’t fret so hard over graduating this year. Your pre-med curriculum usually takes four years but with summer school you can do it in three. Some med schools even said they’d take really superior students after three (regular) years, but that might have changed since I last looked into it.

There are a few other options you may not have thought of, if you miss your graduation deadline or something:

Summer school this year. Even if you get your diploma in August that’s not so bad.
Community college. You can enter without a diploma when you turn 18. Get started doing that and transfer to OSU as a sophomore.
Summer school, as I already mentioned. You can reduce a four-year major to three years pretty easily.

One more thing: do yourself a favor and learn to write well. The better your language skills are, the clearer your thinking will be. The more you understand about language in general, the better your thinking. This is not a recommendation meant for English Lit majors only; it’s for everyone, from computer tech manual writers to Mathematicians to astronomers and doctors. Everyone. Some day you may want to publish something in JAMA or NEJM. If you can’t communicate well, your article will never see daylight.

♥☺ bratiskim∞!’s answer is good. I don’t think your guidance counselor is going to lie to you about *your* school’s graduation requirements. Your state and school district sets its graduation requirements. They are available in clearly written form through your school district offices. I’m certain your counselor will know what they are at the school you are attending. If you meet the requirements they set out, you can graduate. However, I would not rely on her for information about the graduation requirements for the online school. Unless the online school you are attending is a public school, their curriculum may not meet the requirements for public school transfer credits. The public school *can* decide if the classes you took are equivalent, and therefore if you can graduate. If the school doesn’t accept the online school’s courses, you’ll have to finish next year if you want to graduate from your high school. The online high school you are attending might accept your credits and allow you to graduate. Some have less stringent graduation requirements than public schools.

Now, as for the part of the question about admission to Ohio State, it’s always best to contact the university directly. They are the best source of information about their admissions requirements. It does sound as if you need to bring up your ACT score in order to gain admission. Although it isn’t what you want to do, finishing next year will give you the best chance to do that. You will have time to study and take practice tests. You can always apply this year and reapply next year if you are not accepted.

I don’t have much to add to ♥☺ bratiskim∞’s answer about scholarships. Many employers offer scholarships. My credit union and the trade union my husband belongs to both offer scholarships, although they are not usually enough to cover 100% of tuition, books, room and board. Almost all students have to supplement them by taking loans, getting help from their families or working part time. Do be sure and meet all application deadlines. Universities don’t make exceptions for their deadlines.

As a side note, while I think working on your writing skills will be important, pointing it out in the context of answering your question isn’t polite. *All* of us, including that answer, could use some work on our writing skills.
